The English translation for this natak is "The Wife's Brother". It depicts the friendship between two friends, Kishan and Ramesh, who are both married to sisters from the same family. As it goes on, their wives try to get them back from each other, until it seems that they have lost everything. However, Ramesh gets Kishan out of jail, and they make amends. This is a Gujarati natak, which is the origin of the word "natak", meaning drama in Gujarati. This drama has many sub-plots and strong emotions. The theme which runs through the whole play is truth versus lies, friendship versus jealousy, truth versus lies, truth versus lies. It focuses on the pain of trying to find your true love when your spouse is not there for you because she's married to someone else. The author of this play wrote it in 1882 during his imprisonment for political reasons by the British government in place of his more famous contemporary writer Natwar Singh. It is a complex story of the hero Kishan, his friend Ramesh and their wives Radha and Sharda. The play was first published in 1882 in Bombay by the Shikarpur Press. It was later translated into English by A. M. Maffey and published by the Mumbai-based Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan under its Bhavan's Gujarati library series in 1961. It has been translated from Gujarati to Hindi, English, Oriya, Telugu, Tamil, Sindhi and Urdu at different times during India's independence struggle movement against Britain. The play was a big hit. It was not only a dramatic hit but a literary one too. This play has been adapted in several languages and published all over India. It appears in the Mainstream Modern Gujarati by V Daftary, published by S K Bhatia, New Delhi - 2007 A free download version of this Gujarathi natak is available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/UJAD [v1, v2] The Hindi language version is available at http://www.bharatbatinagarha. com/pdf_gujarati.html [v1, v2] The Telugu version is available at http://telugucharitra.com/play-performances [v1, v2] The Tamil version is available at http://www.cherukuriendluri.com/plays/kannadasan.pdf [v1, v2] The Urdu version is available at http://www.alhamraonline.net/newuploads/digest2/digest2006-6-10_21_22_40. cfa1e77820
